From here, you depart the bustling city for a scenic four-hour drive toward the world-renowned Amboseli National Park. As you approach the park, the horizon is dominated by the awe-inspiring snow-capped peaks of Mount Kilimanjaro, the highest free-standing mountain in the world. After checking into your lodge and enjoying a fresh lunch, you will head out for an afternoon game drive. Amboseli is legendary for its massive “tuskers”—giant African elephants that roam the plains in large family herds. Beneath the shadow of the mountain, you will search for lions, cheetahs, and zebras, concluding your first day with a stunning African sunset over the savannah.

Day 2: Sunrise Over Kilimanjaro and Maasai Heritage

Waking up early in Amboseli offers the best chance to witness Mount Kilimanjaro without its typical midday cloud cover. After a sunrise game drive where predators like hyenas and jackals are still active, you will spend the day exploring the park’s diverse ecosystems. You will visit the lush Enkongo Narok swamps, where elephants and hippos gather in the cooling waters, and head to Observation Hill for a panoramic view of the entire park. Following a hearty breakfast, you bid farewell to Amboseli and journey toward the rugged landscapes of Tsavo West National Park. This park is a stark contrast to Amboseli, featuring ancient volcanic hills and dense green woodlands. After lunch at your lodge, your afternoon exploration takes you to the famous Mzima Springs. From an incredible underwater observatory, you can watch hippos and crocodiles glide through crystal-clear volcanic water. The adventure continues to the Shetani Lava Flow, a massive expanse of black folded lava that tells the story of the region’s fiery past. As you navigate the park’s winding tracks, keep a keen eye out for the rare black rhino in the Ngulia Sanctuary before returning to your lodge for dinner.

Day 4: Traversing the Vast Plains to Tsavo East

On the fourth day, you transition from the hills of the West to the vast, open savannahs of Tsavo East National Park. Known as the “Theatre of the Wild,” Tsavo East is one of the largest protected areas in Kenya and is famous for its “Red Elephants,” so named because of the dust-red volcanic soil they use for bathing. Upon arrival and after a midday rest, you will set out to explore the Yatta Plateau, the world’s longest lava flow. This park offers an untamed atmosphere where you can witness large prides of lions and herds of buffalo gathering at the Aruba Dam. The wide-open vistas make for incredible photography, especially as the golden hour light illuminates the red earth and ancient baobab trees.

Day 5: The Final Safari and the White Sands of the Coast

Your final day in the wilderness begins with a dawn game drive, the perfect time to catch the big cats on a morning hunt. After returning to the lodge for a final safari breakfast, you will begin your journey toward the sparkling Kenyan coast. The drive takes approximately three hours as the acacia trees slowly give way to swaying palm trees and the scent of the Indian Ocean. Depending on your preference, your Sunup Adventures guide will drop you off at your beach resort in Mombasa, Diani, Malindi, or Watamu.
