7-Day Batian North Face Technical Climb: Mt. Kenya’s Ultimate Challenge

Conquer the 5,199m true summit. Experience world-class alpine rock climbing from June to October.

The Experience: Why North Face?

The North Face Standard Route is the gold standard for technical climbing on Mt. Kenya during the northern summer. Unlike the trekking routes to Point Lenana, this path requires 16–22 pitches of multi-pitch rock climbing, navigating the iconic Firmin’s Tower and the Amphitheater.

Frequently Asked Questions: Batian North Face Climb

What is the best month to climb the North Face of Mount Kenya?

The North Face climbing season runs from June to October. During these months, the sun is in the north, which melts the ice and snow off the vertical faces of Batian. This creates dry, high-friction rock conditions ideal for technical climbing. If you are looking to climb between December and March, we recommend the South East Face route.

How difficult is the Batian North Face Standard Route?

The route is graded as a Grade IV+ to V (US 5.8 to 5.9 / UK Severe). While the technical moves are manageable for an experienced rock climber, the challenge is amplified by the high altitude (5,000m+), cold temperatures, and the length of the day. You should be comfortable with multi-pitch climbing and efficient at transitions.

What is the summit day like?

Summit day on the North Face is an “Alpine Start,” usually beginning at 4:00 AM. You will face 10 to 14 hours of continuous activity, involving roughly 18–22 pitches of climbing and scrambling. The descent involves multiple technical rappels (abseils) back to the base of the peak. It is physically and mentally demanding.

Do I need to be a professional climber to summit Batian?

You do not need to be a professional, but you must be an experienced rock climber. We require our clients to have prior experience with multi-pitch climbing, basic rope work, and belaying. If you are a trekker without technic]al experience, we recommend our Point Lenana (4,985m) treks instead.

What gear does Sunup Adventures provide?

We provide all group technical equipment, including dynamic ropes, slings, cams, nuts, and carabiners. We also provide all camping gear (tents, mattresses) and kitchen supplies. You are responsible for your personal climbing kit: harness, helmet, climbing shoes (rock shoes), and mountaineering boots.

How do we handle acclimatization?

Our 7-day itinerary is specifically designed to follow the “climb high, sleep low” principle. By spending two nights at or above 4,200m before the summit push, and including a dedicated technical training day, we significantly reduce the risk of Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS).

What happens in case of an emergency or altitude sickness?

Your safety is our priority. Our lead guides are trained in high-altitude medicine and rescue. We carry pulse oximeters to monitor oxygen saturation daily. In the event of severe AMS or injury, we coordinate with the Mount Kenya Rescue Team and can facilitate helicopter evacuations to Nanyuki or Nairobi hospitals if necessary.

Are there porter services available for technical gear?

Yes. While you will carry a light daypack with your water, snacks, and extra layers, our porters carry the heavy communal gear, tents, and food to the base camps. This allows you to save your energy for the vertical rock of the North Face.

Is there a traverse to Nelion included?

This specific 7-day itinerary focuses on the direct ascent of Batian via the North Face. A traverse to Nelion via the “Gate of Mists” is a more complex undertaking often requiring ice axes and crampons. If you are interested in the “Twin Peak” traverse, please contact us for a customized 8 or 9-day itinerary.

Do I need a visa and park permits?

Sunup Adventures handles all Mount Kenya National Park permits and camping fees, which are included in your package. For entry into Kenya, most nationalities require an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) which should be applied for at least two weeks before arrival.
