DETAILED ITINERARY

Day 1: Nairobi to Lake Naivasha & Hell’s Gate Exploration

Your journey begins at 08:00 hrs with a professional pickup from your Nairobi hotel or Jomo Kenyatta International Airport. We descend the scenic Great Rift Valley escarpment, arriving at Lake Naivasha in time for a relaxed lunch and check-in. In the afternoon, explore Hell’s Gate National Park, a unique destination where you can walk or cycle through dramatic obsidian caves and towering gorges. This park allows you to get up close to giraffes, zebras, and buffaloes in the very landscape that inspired The Lion King. After a memorable afternoon of exploration, return to your accommodation for a comfortable overnight stay.

Day 2: Lake Naivasha, Crescent Island to Lake Nakuru National Park

Start the day with a morning boat ride across Lake Naivasha toward Crescent Island Game Sanctuary. This unique sanctuary offers a rare opportunity for a walking safari among wild animals like wildebeests, waterbucks, and giraffes without the presence of predators. After the boat ride and walk, continue your journey to Lake Nakuru National Park. Upon arrival, enjoy a delicious lunch followed by an exciting afternoon game drive. Lake Nakuru is a renowned rhino sanctuary and a haven for birdlife, where you can spot both black and white rhinos along with the famous flamingos that often flock to the lake’s shores.

Day 3: Lake Nakuru to Masai Mara National Reserve

Leave Lake Nakuru after breakfast and make your way to the iconic Masai Mara National Reserve, one of Africa’s premier wildlife destinations. The Mara is world-famous for its abundant wildlife and the breathtaking landscapes of its vast, rolling plains. Upon arrival, embark on a thrilling afternoon game drive to track the Big Five. Whether you are searching for lions lounging in the grass or elephants traversing the savannah, the Mara offers an action-packed wildlife experience from the moment you enter the gates.

Day 4: Full Day in Masai Mara

Spend a full day immersed in the wonders of the Masai Mara with both morning and afternoon game drives. This schedule maximizes your chances of witnessing predator-prey interactions and observing the big cats in action. If traveling between July and October, you may even witness the Great Wildebeest Migration, a spectacular natural event. For those interested in local heritage, there is an optional opportunity to visit a traditional Maasai village to learn about their rich culture and ancient traditions. Retire to your authentic tented camp for a final night under the African stars.

Day 5: Masai Mara to Nairobi

On your final day, savor a leisurely morning breakfast before bidding farewell to this remarkable wilderness. Start your journey back to Nairobi, reflecting on the incredible memories made during your five-day safari. We can stop at local curio shops along the way for you to pick up handcrafted souvenirs before reaching the city. You will arrive in the afternoon for a seamless transfer to the airport or your hotel, marking the end of your Kenyan adventure with Sunup Adventures.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Here are the answers to the most common questions from our travelers regarding this 5-day Kenyan safari adventure.

  • What is the best time of year to visit these parks? While Kenya is a year-round destination, the dry seasons (July to October and January to February) are generally considered the best for wildlife viewing as animals congregate around water holes. The months between July and October are especially popular for witnessing the Great Wildebeest Migration in the Masai Mara.

  • What kind of vehicle will we use? We use customized 4×4 safari Land Cruisers specifically modified for the rugged terrain of East Africa. These vehicles feature pop-up roofs for unobstructed 360-degree game viewing, comfortable seating, and radio communication to ensure our guides can track wildlife sightings effectively.

  • Is it safe to drink the tap water? We strongly advise against drinking tap water in Kenya. We provide a generous supply of bottled mineral water in your safari vehicle throughout the duration of your trip. We recommend using bottled or treated water even for brushing your teeth at more remote bush camps.

  • Are there any luggage restrictions? If your safari involves internal bush flights, light aircraft have strict luggage weight limits (usually 15kg in soft-sided bags). Since this is a road-based safari, standard luggage is fine, but we always recommend packing light in soft-sided bags, as they are much easier to stow in the back of the safari vehicle.

  • What should I wear on safari? Dress in layers. Early morning game drives can be chilly, while afternoons are typically warm. Neutral-colored clothing (khaki, tan, olive) is recommended to blend into the environment and avoid attracting insects. Don’t forget a wide-brimmed hat, high-SPF sunscreen, and a good pair of polarized sunglasses.

  • Is a visa required to enter Kenya? Yes, most international travelers require an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) to enter Kenya. We recommend checking the official Kenyan immigration portal well in advance of your travel date to ensure you have the necessary documentation.

  • How much should I tip the staff? Tipping is at your discretion but is a standard way to show appreciation for excellent service in the tourism industry. As a general guideline, many travelers tip their driver-guide between $10–$20 USD per day, depending on the level of service and the size of your group.

  • Do I need vaccinations or malaria medication? We recommend consulting with a travel clinic or your doctor at least 4–6 weeks before your departure. They can provide the most up-to-date advice regarding recommended vaccinations and malaria prophylaxis for the specific regions you are visiting.
