DETAILED ITINERARY

Day 1 | The Great Rift Valley & The Rhino Kingdom

Nairobi – Lake Nakuru National Park

Your adventure begins at 08:00 hrs with a private pickup from your Nairobi hotel or JKIA. Leaving the city bustle behind, we wind down the spectacular Great Rift Valley Escarpment, pausing at the viewpoint for a panoramic photo opportunity.

By midday, we enter Lake Nakuru National Park, a sanctuary famous for its “Pink Glow.” While thousands of flamingos and pelicans paint the shoreline, the real stars are the prehistoric Rhinos (both Black and White) and the rare Rothschild Giraffes. After a gourmet lunch at your lodge, embark on an afternoon game drive through yellow-backed acacia forests. Keep an eye out for the park’s famous tree-climbing lions and elusive leopards before retreating to your lodge for a sunset dinner.

  • Highlight: Tracking endangered rhinos in one of Kenya’s most successful sanctuaries.

Day 2 | Into the Great Golden Wild

Lake Nakuru – Masai Mara National Reserve

After an early breakfast, we bid farewell to the Rift Valley lakes and head toward the world-renowned Masai Mara. This drive is a visual feast, transitioning from lush highlands to the vast, open savannahs of Narok.

Arriving in the Mara, you are greeted by the quintessential “Lion King” landscape—endless rolling plains dotted with iconic acacia trees. After checking into your luxury camp, we head out for an introductory game drive. As the midday heat fades, the Mara comes alive. We’ll scan the horizon for the Big Five, catching the first glimpse of the predators as they begin their evening prowl. We return to camp just as the African sun dips below the horizon, painting the sky in fiery oranges and purples.

  • Highlight: Entering the world’s most famous wildlife theater at the “Golden Hour.”

Day 3 | The Mara Unbound: A Full Day of Discovery

Full Day in the Masai Mara

Today, the wild is your office. We start with a sunrise game drive, the best time to witness a lion hunt or spot a cheetah testing the speed of a gazelle.

If you are traveling between July and October, we head toward the Mara River, the stage for the Great Migration. Here, you’ll witness the raw power of nature as thousands of wildebeest and zebras navigate crocodile-infested waters. Your expert Sunup guide will find a private spot for a picnic lunch under a “Lone Tree,” allowing you to dine surrounded by the sights and sounds of the untamed bush. The afternoon is spent seeking out the “Secret Six”—the smaller, rarer creatures—or visiting a Masai Village (optional) to learn the ancient traditions of the Mara’s guardians.

  • Highlight: A private bush picnic in the heart of the reserve, far from the tourist crowds.

Day 4 | The Final Sunrise & Return to Nairobi

Masai Mara – Nairobi

Savor your final morning in the wilderness with a leisurely breakfast on the deck, listening to the morning chorus of over 450 bird species.

We then begin our scenic journey back to Nairobi. We’ll stop at a curio workshop, where you can support local artisans and pick up hand-carved souvenirs or vibrant beadwork. Arrive in Nairobi by late afternoon (approx. 15:00 hrs), where we’ll transfer you to the airport or your hotel, leaving you with a camera full of photos and a soul full of memories.

  • Highlight: One last crisp morning in the wild before returning to the city.

Know Before You Go: Safari Essentials 2026

Preparing for your Kenyan safari is part of the excitement! Here is everything you need to know to ensure a seamless journey from Nairobi to the Mara.

1. Entry Requirements & Visas

  • Kenya eTA: As of 2026, Kenya is a visa-free country, but all visitors (including infants) must apply for an Electronic Travel Authorisation (eTA) at least 3 days before departure via the official government portal.

  • Passport: Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your arrival date with at least one blank page.

2. Health & Vaccinations

  • Yellow Fever: A certificate is mandatory if you are arriving from a country with a risk of yellow fever transmission (e.g., Ethiopia, Uganda, or certain South American countries).

  • Malaria: Both Lake Nakuru and the Masai Mara are in malaria-risk zones. We strongly recommend consulting your doctor about prophylactic medication (such as Malarone or Doxycycline) before you fly.

  • Hydration: Only drink bottled or filtered water, which Sunup Adventures provides in all our safari vehicles.

3. Packing List: What’s in Your Bag?

  • The “Safari Palette”: Pack lightweight, breathable clothing in neutral colors (khaki, tan, olive). Avoid dark blue and black (which attract tsetse flies) and bright white (which gets dusty quickly).

  • Layers are Key: Mornings in the Mara can be surprisingly chilly (10°C – 12°C), while afternoons soar to 28°C. Bring a warm fleece or windbreaker for early game drives.

  • Footwear: Comfortable sneakers or light hiking boots are perfect. You don’t need heavy trekking boots unless you’ve booked a walking safari.

  • Protection: High-SPF sunscreen, a wide-brimmed hat with a chin strap, and insect repellent (DEET-based is most effective).

4. Money & Tipping Etiquette

  • Currency: The Kenya Shilling (KES) is used for local purchases. Major credit cards are accepted in lodges, but small cash bills (USD or KES) are vital for tips and curios.

  • Tipping Guide: While discretionary, tipping is a kind way to show appreciation:

    • Safari Guide: $15–$25 per guest, per day.

    • Lodge Staff: $10–$15 per guest, per day (usually via a communal “Tip Box” at reception).

  • Plastic Bag Ban: Kenya has a strict ban on single-use plastic bags. Ensure your luggage doesn’t contain plastic carrier bags (Ziploc bags for toiletries are generally permitted).

5. Best Time to Visit

  • The Great Migration: July to October is the peak season to see the wildebeest river crossings.

  • The Green Season: November to May offers lush landscapes, incredible birdwatching, and lower “secret season” rates.

📸 Pro Photography Tip

Bring a camera with at least a 200mm–400mm lens to capture the whiskers on a lion or the plumage of a Lilac-breasted Roller. Don’t forget an extra memory card—you’ll take more photos than you think!
