Essential Trip Details
THE DAY-BY-DAY JOURNEY
Day 1: Journey from Nairobi to the Heart of the Masai Mara
Your expedition begins with a 07:00 AM departure from Nairobi, heading southwest toward the Great Rift Valley. This scenic drive serves as your introduction to the Kenyan highlands before you arrive at the world-famous Masai Mara National Reserve. After settling into your safari camp, the afternoon features your first professional game drive. Your expert guide will navigate the rolling grasslands to find the Mara’s famous residents, including lions, giraffes, and zebras, providing a perfect introduction to the wild before you return to camp for dinner and an overnight stay under the African sky.
Day 2: Immersive Wildlife Tracking in the Masai Mara
Wake up to the sounds of the African bush for a full day of exploration in one of the most wildlife-dense regions on Earth. The morning and afternoon are dedicated to tracking the “Big Five,” with a particular focus on the reserve’s legendary lion prides and elusive leopards. Your guide will interpret animal behaviors and the intricate balance of the savannah as you traverse different sectors of the park. Between drives, you will enjoy the tranquil atmosphere of your camp, allowing the rhythm of the wilderness to set the pace for your day.
Day 3: Witnessing the Great Migration Spectacle
On your second full day in the Mara, the focus shifts toward the dramatic river systems and the open plains that host the Great Wildebeest Migration. You will spend time near the Mara River, where thousands of herbivores often gather to brave the waters. This day offers a deep dive into the sheer scale of the ecosystem, providing endless opportunities for photography and observation of the interactions between predators and prey. The evening concludes with a final sunset over the Mara, marking the end of the Kenyan chapter of your safari.
Day 4: Crossing the Border to the Western Serengeti
After a final breakfast in Kenya, you will travel toward the Isebania border to transition into Tanzania. Your destination is the Western Serengeti, a region renowned for its rugged beauty and the Grumeti River. This area is home to massive Nile crocodiles and large pods of hippos. Upon arrival and check-in at your new camp, an afternoon game drive will introduce you to the unique topography of the Serengeti’s Western Corridor, where the open horizons offer a different perspective on the African wilderness.
Day 5: Exploring the Central Serengeti Plains
Your journey continues deeper into the heart of the Serengeti National Park, moving into the Central Seronera region. Known as the “Big Cat Capital” of Africa, this area is characterized by iconic acacia trees and granite rocky outcrops known as kopjes, which serve as perfect lookout points for lions and cheetahs. After a midday break and lunch at your lodge, you will embark on an afternoon drive through the Seronera Valley, where the high concentration of resident wildlife ensures constant action and spectacular sightings.
Day 6: A Full Day in the Endless Plains
This day is dedicated to the vast, “endless plains” that give the Serengeti its name. You will have the flexibility to choose between a full-day game drive with a picnic lunch or split morning and afternoon sessions. The central region offers incredible year-round wildlife viewing, from wandering elephant herds to the many bird species that inhabit the riverine forests. This immersive experience allows you to witness the daily struggle for survival and the breathtaking beauty of the Tanzanian savannah in its most authentic form.
Day 7: Archaeological Wonders and the Ngorongoro Rim
Departing the Serengeti, you will head toward the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, making a significant stop at the Olduvai Gorge. This UNESCO World Heritage site is one of the world’s most important archaeological landmarks, offering a fascinating look at human evolution through its fossil records. After this cultural detour, you will continue your ascent to the rim of the Ngorongoro Crater. The evening is spent at a lodge overlooking the caldera, providing one of the most spectacular views in all of Africa as you prepare for the descent the following morning.
Day 8: The Ngorongoro Crater Floor Safari
Today features a descent into the world’s largest inactive, intact, and unfilled volcanic caldera. The crater floor acts as a natural enclosure for over 25,000 large animals, including some of Tanzania’s last remaining black rhinos. You will spend the day traversing the diverse habitats within the crater—from lush forests to soda lakes filled with flamingos. After a picnic lunch in this “Garden of Eden,” you will ascend back to the rim in the late afternoon, reflecting on the unique ecosystem that makes this one of the Seven Natural Wonders of Africa.
Day 9: Transition to the Tropical Shores of Zanzibar
Leaving the dusty safari trails behind, you will fly from the mainland to the exotic island of Zanzibar. This transition from the “bush” to the “beach” marks the beginning of your relaxation phase. Upon arrival, the scent of spices and the warm breeze of the Indian Ocean welcome you. You will be transferred to your beachfront resort, where the remainder of the day is yours to unwind on the white sands or take a dip in the turquoise waters, marking a serene shift in the energy of your journey.
Day 10: Coastal Relaxation and Coral Reefs
Your first full day on the island is dedicated to the pristine beauty of Zanzibar’s coastline. You may choose to spend the day at leisure, enjoying the amenities of your resort, or engage in water-based activities such as snorkeling or diving in the vibrant coral reefs. The waters around the island are teeming with marine life, offering a different kind of “safari” beneath the waves. As evening falls, enjoy the fresh seafood and Swahili-inspired cuisine that makes Zanzibar a world-class culinary destination.
Day 11: Exploring Stone Town and Spice Heritage
Today offers the opportunity to delve into the rich history and culture of the island. You can visit the historic Stone Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, to wander through its narrow limestone alleys and admire the famous carved wooden doors. A visit to a local spice plantation provides insight into the island’s heritage as the “Spice Island,” where you can see, smell, and taste the cloves, nutmeg, and cinnamon that once drove global trade. The afternoon returns you to the beach for a final sunset over the Indian Ocean.
Day 12: Final Reflections and Departure
On your final morning in paradise, enjoy a slow breakfast and a last walk along the white-sand beach. Depending on your flight schedule, you may have time for. some last-minute souvenir shopping or a final swim. Your transfer will then take you to the airport for your departure flight, bringing an end to an unforgettable 12-day journey that spanned the greatest wildlife reserves in Kenya and Tanzania and concluded on the magical shores of Zanzibar.

Frequently Asked Questions
Travel Logistics & Entry Requirements
Do I need a visa for both Kenya and Tanzania? Yes. Since you are visiting two sovereign nations, you will need separate entry authorizations.
Kenya: As of 2024, Kenya is “visa-free” but requires a mandatory Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) which must be applied for online at least three days before arrival.
Tanzania: Most nationalities require a tourist visa (approx. $50 USD, or $100 USD for US citizens). This can be obtained as an e-Visa online or upon arrival at the border/airport.
What vaccinations are required? A Yellow Fever Vaccination Certificate is strictly required when crossing the border from Kenya into Tanzania. We also highly recommend consulting a travel clinic regarding malaria prophylactics and ensuring your routine vaccinations (Typhoid, Hepatitis A/B) are up to date.
Safari Experience
When is the best time to see the Great Migration? While the migration is a year-round cycle, the most iconic “River Crossings” typically occur in the Masai Mara from late July to September. In October, the herds generally begin their move back south into the Serengeti. For the “Calving Season” in the Southern Serengeti, plan your visit for January or February.
What should I pack for the bush and the beach? The key is layering. Safari mornings are surprisingly chilly, while the afternoons are hot.
Bush: Neutral earth tones (khaki, olive, tan). Avoid dark blue or black, as these attract tsetse flies. Bring a warm fleece for early morning game drives.
Beach: Lightweight linens, swimwear, and sandals for Zanzibar.
Luggage: Please use soft-sided duffel bags. Small domestic aircraft have strict weight limits (usually 15kg/33lbs) and cannot accommodate hard-shell suitcases.
Is there WiFi and electricity in the safari camps? Most luxury lodges and permanent tented camps provide WiFi in common areas (lounge and dining), though it may be intermittent due to the remote locations. Electricity is usually available 24/7 via solar power or generators, and we provide charging points in our safari vehicles for your cameras and phones.
Financials & Tipping
How much should I budget for tipping? Tipping is a customary way to show appreciation for the hard work of your crew. While at your discretion, the general industry guidelines are:
Safari Guide: $20–$30 USD per vehicle, per day.
Lodge Staff: $5–$10 USD per guest, per day (usually via a communal “Tip Box” at reception).
Zanzibar Porters/Drivers: $2–$5 USD per transfer or service.
What is the “Infrastructure Tax” in Zanzibar? The Revolutionary Government of Zanzibar mandates an Infrastructure Tax for all hotel guests. As of 2024/2025, this is typically $5 to $10 USD per person, per night depending on the hotel’s star rating. This is paid directly to the hotel upon check-out and is not included in your safari package.
Safety & Health
Is it safe to go on a safari? Absolutely. Your safety is Sunup Adventures’ top priority. Our guides are experts in animal behavior and will always maintain a safe distance. Our vehicles are equipped with long-range radios and first-aid kits. In the rare event of an emergency, we include AMREF Flying Doctors evacuation coverage to ensure you reach international-standard medical facilities quickly.
Can I drink the tap water? No. We strongly advise against drinking tap water in East Africa. Sunup Adventures provides a constant supply of purified mineral water in our safari vehicles and at all lodges to keep you hydrated and safe.
