DETAILED ITINERARY

Day 1: Nairobi – Naro Moru (The Gateway)

Your adventure begins with a scenic drive from Nairobi to the base town of Naro Moru. This day is dedicated to Acclimatization and Gear Checks.

  • Activity: Travel from Nairobi; final equipment briefing.

  • Stay: Comfortable Lodge/Campsite in Naro Moru.

  • Goal: Prepare your body and mind for the high-altitude trek ahead.

Day 2: Naro Moru Gate – Met Station (3,050m)

After breakfast, we enter the Mount Kenya National Park. We trek through the Montane Forest and the Bamboo Zone, home to diverse birdlife and Colobus monkeys.

  • Hiking Time: 3–4 hours.

  • Terrain: Tropical forest and bamboo thickets.

  • Highlight: Reaching the Met Station for your first night on the mountain.

Day 3: Met Station – Mackinder’s Camp (4,200m)

Today we leave the trees behind. The trail climbs through the moorland and heather zones, crossing the “Vertical Bog.”

  • Hiking Time: 6–7 hours.

  • Terrain: High moorland; crossing the Teleki Valley.

  • Highlight: Arriving at Mackinder’s Camp with an incredible view of the Diamond Couloir and the main peaks.

Day 4: Summit Point Lenana (4,985m) – Austrian Hut

The “Peak” of your journey. We start in the dark to reach Point Lenana as the sun rises over the Indian Ocean horizon.

  • The Summit: Standing at 4,985m, the third-highest point in Kenya.

  • The Traverse: After a celebratory breakfast at Mackinder’s, we trek across the Lewis Glacier and the Tooth Col to reach the Austrian Hut (4,790m).

  • Stay: High-altitude sleep at Austrian Hut, surrounded by glaciers.

Day 5: Gorges Valley Descent – Chogoria – Nairobi

The final day is the most scenic. We descend via the Chogoria Route, famous for its sheer cliffs, waterfalls, and the emerald waters of Lake Michaelson.

  • Hiking Time: 5–7 hours descent.

  • Highlight: The Gorges Valley—widely considered the most beautiful place on Mt. Kenya.

  • The Finish: Meet our private vehicle at Chogoria Gate for the drive back to Nairobi, arriving in the late afternoon.

This route is rated as Moderate to Challenging. While you don’t need technical climbing skills to reach Point Lenana, you do need a good level of cardiovascular fitness. The Naro Moru ascent is steep, and the “Vertical Bog” can be physically taxing, while the Chogoria descent involves long trekking days.

2. What is the “Vertical Bog” and how do I prepare?

The Vertical Bog is a legendary section of the Naro Moru route characterized by steep, marshy, and often muddy terrain.

  • Pro Tip: Bring waterproof gaiters and sturdy, waterproof hiking boots. Trekking poles are highly recommended to help with balance and depth testing in the mud.

3. What are the Park Entry Fees for 2026?

As of 2026, Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) fees for Mount Kenya are as follows (per day):

  • Non-Residents: $70 USD

  • Kenya Residents: 1,100 KES

  • East African Citizens: 800 KES

4. Is altitude sickness a major concern?

Yes, Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) can affect anyone regardless of fitness. Because this 5-day itinerary includes an acclimatization day at Mackinder’s Camp, your success rate is much higher. We recommend:

  • Drinking 3-4 liters of water daily.

  • Walking at a “Pole Pole” (slow) pace.

  • Consulting your doctor about Diamox before the trip.

5. Are plastic water bottles allowed?

No. Mount Kenya National Park is a “Plastic-Free Zone.” Disposable plastic bottles are strictly prohibited at the gates. You must bring reusable hydration bladders (like a Camelbak) or Nalgene-style hard plastic/metal bottles.

6. What is the best month to trek in 2026?

  • Best Conditions: January to March and June to October (Dry seasons).

  • Solitude Seekers: Late October to early December (Short rains) offers lush greenery and fewer crowds, though you should be prepared for afternoon showers.

7. What should I pack for the summit night?

The temperature at Point Lenana can drop to -10°C (14°F) before sunrise. Essential gear includes:

  • A high-quality thermal base layer.

  • A down jacket or heavy fleece.

  • Windproof/waterproof outer shell.

  • Warm mittens and a balaclava/beanie.
