Navigating Kenya’s Mandatory Travel Health Insurance: What Travelers Need to Know

Kenya continues to be one of the world’s most sought-after destinations, offering breathtaking wildlife safaris, stunning landscapes, and unforgettable cultural experiences. If you are planning a trip or booking adventures for your clients, there is an important update regarding entry requirements that you need to keep on your radar.

Kenya has officially integrated mandatory travel health insurance directly into its Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) process. To ensure your journey or your clients’ trips run seamlessly, here is a breakdown of what has changed, who it affects, and how to navigate the new system.

What Has Changed?

Effective immediately, travel health insurance is now built directly into all new ETA applications. Applicants cannot complete or submit their ETA without fulfilling this insurance requirement.

Who Does It Apply To?

  • Applicable To: Foreign visitors staying in Kenya for less than 12 months, arriving at all points of entry (air, land, and water).
  • Exemptions: East African Community (EAC) citizens are exempt from this requirement.

Key Details of the Mandate

  • Cost: The insurance premium is US$44 per traveler, plus additional processing charges.
  • Cover Period: Current quotes generated through the system show a three-month coverage period.
  • Independent Policies: Currently, there is no option to upload or substitute independent travel insurance policies bought elsewhere.
  • Important Note: This mandatory government-linked insurance should be viewed as a baseline entry requirement and taken out in addition to comprehensive personal travel insurance.

How to Get Covered

Travelers can secure their mandatory insurance through two main methods:

  1. During the ETA Application: Insurance is purchased seamlessly as an integrated part of the standard ETA application process.
  2. In Advance: It can also be purchased separately via the official eCitizen portal. The system automatically detects the active policy when the ETA is submitted.

What About Clients Who Already Hold an ETA?

For travelers whose ETAs were issued before October 6, entries have been reported as smooth with no problems so far. However, as a precaution until official guidance is published, it is recommended that they purchase the insurance separately on eCitizen without needing to reapply.

Handy Tip for Travelers

Because no downloadable insurance certificate is currently issued by the system, we strongly recommend that travelers save their insurance reference number along with a screenshot of the “Valid” status.

Still to Be Confirmed:

  • Whether a single policy covers multiple entries.
  • How long existing travel insurance alternatives will be accepted.

Official updates will be shared as soon as they are published by authorities.
