Get ready, motorsport fans! Formula 1 is officially returning to the African continent for the first time in over three decades. In a landmark announcement, it has been confirmed that Rwanda will host an F1 Grand Prix starting in the early 2030s.
This momentous agreement marks a monumental chapter for global motorsport, bridging a gap that has existed since the final South African Grand Prix at Kyalami in 1993. With this historic addition, Formula 1 will finally race across every single inhabited continent on Earth.

A New Era of Racing in Bugesera, Rwanda
The high-octane action will take place on a brand-new, purpose-built circuit currently in development in Bugesera, located about 40 kilometres south of Rwanda’s vibrant capital city, Kigali.
Formula 1 and Rwandan leadership have secured a 10-year agreement for the African Grand Prix, presented by Visit Rwanda. While the exact inaugural race date and construction milestones will be announced in due course, anticipation is already reaching a fever pitch worldwide.
Rwandan President Paul Kagame announced the landmark partnership at a ceremony in Kigali, stating:
“Today belongs to Africa. For more than three decades, the world’s premier motorsport championship has raced without this continent.”
FIA President Mohamed Ben Sulayem hailed the agreement as “an historic moment for the sport” and a vital step in creating a lasting legacy, inspiring new generations, and developing motorsport talent across Africa. Formula 1 President and CEO Stefano Domenicali echoed the sentiment, noting that Africa has always been part of F1’s future, built on a long-term commitment and a clear vision for meaningful impact.
A Triumph for Lewis Hamilton and Global Fans
Seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton has been one of the most vocal advocates for bringing F1 back to Africa, frequently urging leadership to prioritize the continent. Speaking ahead of a recent Grand Prix weekend, Hamilton shared his passion:
“It is, for me, the most important continent, to be honest, the most beautiful continent. We’re on all the other continents but that one and there should be no reason for it.”
With Formula 1’s packed global calendar evolving over the coming years—including expiring hosting deals for several circuits leading up to 2030—the stage is perfectly set for Rwanda to make its grand debut on the world stage.
